Almost Famous Podcast

 ALMOST FAMOUS PODCAST

#3 Podcast in UK Relationships Charts

The presenter of the Almost Famous Podcast, Barnaby Slater, is not famous. He's pleased about this. At least, he thinks he is. But Barnaby has spent his life surrounded by fame. His father had a couple of hits as lead singer of a band from Liverpool in the 60s (not The Beatles, alas). His mother got to number 2 in the pop charts in the 70s, something Barnaby's male school teachers never failed to remind him of when creepily talking about the posters they had of her on their adolescent bedroom walls. Then in the early 90s Barnaby's stepfather was the most famous TV comedy panel show presenter in the country and labelled "TV's Mr Sex" by the newspapers.

Series One

After not-nearly-enough therapy Barnaby decided that he wanted to speak to other people who grew up around celebrity to see how it affected their own journey through life. He was particularly keen to chat to those who have gone in to a similar field as their famous parents/siblings, as he often worried about the impact that being known as Angus Deayton’s stepson would have on his own career, for better or worse.

As well as the inevitably hilarious anecdotes from guests having been surrounded by the bizarre world of celebrity all their lives, Almost Famous is also a serious look at how people's perception of fame differs from the reality, and an insight into how an upbringing so close to the transient world of celebrity can have a bearing on life choices, relationships and mental health.

Below is an episode from series one where comedian and author David Baddiel interviews Barnaby about his experiences growing up around fame:

Series Two, Three and Four

In Series Two, Three and Four of Almost Famous, Barnaby explores the subject of fame more directly with guests who’ve experienced it themselves, and asks them how it has affected their own journey, as well as the lives of those around them.

Guests for Series Two include: Ralf Little, Rhys James, Clive Anderson, Penny Smith, Matt Richardson and many more.

Series Three and Four were all recorded remotely during 2020’s on and off Covid-19 lockdowns.

Series Five

In Series Five, Almost Famous has become a daily podcast with episodes called ‘15 Minutes of Fame’. For these shows, Barnaby has curated and narrated some of the most open, honest and controversial stories that famous people have ever told.

Below is an episode where Barnaby narrates Elton John’s thoughts on Princess Diana and how difficult it was to have to sing at her funeral.
